Richard Gleeson, the English fast-medium bowler, has been signed by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as a replacement for Devon Conway. Conway, a New Zealand opener who had been a key player for CSK over the last two IPL seasons, has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury.

Devon Conway to miss IPL 2024 for CSK

Conway’s absence is a major blow to CSK, considering his impressive performance in the previous seasons. Over the course of the last two IPL seasons, Conway played 23 matches and scored 924 runs, which included 9 half-centuries and a highest score of 92*. His contribution was instrumental to CSK’s fifth title triumph in 2023.

However, the addition of Gleeson to the squad brings a new dynamic to the team. Gleeson has represented England in 6 T20Is and has 9 wickets against his name. He has also played 90 T20s and picked 101 T20 wickets. Gleeson’s debut was particularly noteworthy as he dismissed Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant inside his first eight balls to finish with 3-15.

Gleeson, a roving cricketer across franchise leagues around the world, has played in the Blast and The Hundred at home as well as in the BBL, PSL, BPL, SA20, ILT20, and the Abu Dhabi T10. In all T20 cricket, he has 101 wickets from 90 matches at 24.32 with an economy rate of 8.18.

CSK signed Gleeson at his base price of INR 50 Lac. This strategic move by CSK is expected to bolster their bowling attack for the remainder of the IPL 2024. With eight points from six games and a net run rate of +0.726, the Super Kings are now third on the points table in IPL 2024, behind only Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
