Sehwag slams Ravichandran Ashwin for failing to pick wickets in IPL 2024

Virender Sehwag, the former Indian opener, has a sharp critique of Ravichandran Ashwin’s performance in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). Ashwin, a veteran spin-bowling all-rounder for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), has been under scrutiny for his lack of wickets in the tournament.

In the IPL 2024, Ravichandran Ashwin managed to take only two wickets in eight matches, with an economy rate of over nine runs per over. Despite these disappointing figures, Ashwin claimed that taking wickets in T20s is irrelevant. This statement sparked a backlash from Sehwag, who disagreed vehemently with this perspective.

Sehwag blasts Ravichandran Ashwin

Sehwag criticized Ravichandran Ashwin’s approach to bowling in T20 cricket, particularly highlighting a statement by Ashwin where he mirrored KL Rahul’s controversial remark about strike rates, suggesting that taking wickets in T20s is irrelevant. Sehwag disagreed vehemently with this perspective, emphasizing the importance of bowlers playing aggressively to secure wickets rather than just focusing on limiting runs.

“This is the same as when KL Rahul had said that the strike rate doesn’t matter. Same thing. He said it for batting, and Ashwin has said it for bowling that it doesn’t matter if you get the wickets. If his stats aren’t good, then he may not even get picked in the auction next year. When you pick a bowler, do you expect him to give away 25-30 runs or do you expect him to give you wickets and become man of the match twice or thrice?” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Sehwag went on to suggest that Ravichandran Ashwin’s mindset was the reason for his lack of wickets. He pointed out that Ashwin’s competitors, such as Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, have been picking wickets at regular intervals. Sehwag believes that if Ashwin had more faith in his off-spin or doosra, he could bag more wickets.

The former Indian opener didn’t mince words when he said that if Ashwin’s stats aren’t good, then he may not even get picked in the auction next year. He further added that if he were a mentor or a coach of a franchise, he wouldn’t think like Ashwin. If his bowler is thinking about saving runs and not taking wickets, he won’t find a place in the team.

“All his competitors – Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav or anyone else – are getting the wickets. He thinks if he bowls off spin then anyone will hit him. This is why he bowls his carrom bowl, which is why he is not getting any wickets. Maybe if he believes in his off-spin or doosra, he can bag more wickets. But that’s his mindset. But if I were a mentor or a coach of a franchise, I wouldn’t think like that. If my bowler is thinking about saving runs and not taking wickets, he won’t find a place in the team,” he added.
