Shubman Gill might be a deserving candidate for the T20 World Cup 2024, but will not find a place in the squad, feels former India cricketer Parthiv Patel. Speaking on Jio Cinema ahead of the T20 World Cup selection meeting, Patel said that there is an abundance of talent in the Indian top order and hence Shubman Gill will have to wait for his chance.

Obstacles for Shubman Gill to make it to T20 WC

Parthiv Patel acknowledged Gill’s deservingness but explained that the abundance of talent in the Indian top order might have led to his exclusion. According to Patel, the top-order spots are likely to be occupied by Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli.

“It is difficult for Shubman Gill to make it to the T20 World Cup side. We have to look at the top three players that are in the squad. It is not about not having the ability, but someone has to miss out due to the abundance of talent in the side. Make no mistake, Shubman Gill is a deserving candidate, but these three are the best (Rohit, Yashasvi, Virat),” Parthiv Patel said on Jio Cinema.

Gill’s exclusion may seem surprising given his impressive performance in the IPL 2023 season, where he scored almost 900 runs. However, his performance in the ongoing IPL season has been inconsistent, which could have influenced the selectors’ decision.

Another factor that may work against Gill is the intense competition for spots in the top half of the batting order. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube have performed well, making it difficult for Gill to secure a spot.

Furthermore, Gill’s average in the 14 T20Is that he has played for India is 25, which is considered low for a top-order batter. This, coupled with the fact that he does not add an X-factor to the side, could lead to his exclusion.

In the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, Gill has scored 320 runs from 10 matches at a strike rate of 140.97. Gill’s GT have not been doing well in the tournament and have lost 6 games from 10 matches.
