Virat Kohli, the former Indian captain and a stalwart of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has lashed out at critics who have questioned his strike rate. This comes ahead of the T20 World Cup, where Kohli’s performance will be crucial for the Indian team.
Kohli has been in sublime form in the IPL 2024, crossing 500 runs in a single season for the fourth time. Despite this impressive run volume, Kohli has faced criticism for the strike rate at which he is scoring in T20 matches. His strike rate of 147.49 has come under scrutiny, even though it places him eighth in the strike rate rankings among the top 10 batsmen in the IPL.
Virat Kohli’s response to his strike rate criticisms
In a post-match interview, Kohli responded to these criticisms in a strongly-worded statement. He said, “All the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones who love talking about this stuff. But, for me, it’s about winning the game for the team. And there’s a reason why you do it for 15 years – because you’ve done this day in and day out; you’ve won games for your teams”.
Kohli further added, “I’m not quite sure if you’ve been in that situation yourself to sit and speak about the game from a box. I don’t think it’s the same thing (as playing out there)”. This statement reflects Kohli’s belief that critics, who are not in the middle of the action, may not fully understand the complexities and pressures of the game.
In a recent match against Gujarat Titans, Virat Kohli silenced his critics with an unbeaten 44-ball 70. He made a conscious effort to take on the spinners in the powerplay and was successful in doing so. This performance not only helped his team chase down a target of 201 runs but also served as a fitting reply to his critics.
Virat Kohli said, "winning the game for my team matters. There's a reason you do it for 15 years, because you've won games for your team. I'm not sure if you have been in that situation yourself, to sit in the box and talk about the game, I don't think it's the same thing". pic.twitter.com/Cef4sBf1IF
