With general elections set to take place in April and as the suspense continues to loom, let’s look how the organizers are approaching to schedule the event.

IPL 2024 Schedule expected time frame

As announced earlier during the IPL auction by the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) secretary Jay Shah, IPL 2024 will commence from March 22, after the conclusion of India vs England Test series. ICC T20 WC is scheduled from June 1. So, the schedule is expected to fit in this time range to conduct IPL 2024.

With general elections in April, the security will be a huge factor to schedule IPL 2024. A high security recruitment is required to host the games at venues. This lies within the hands of state government. Previously, the local government refused to provide the security during the elections which resulted in shifting of games to another venue.

The Election Commission will soon announce the election dates in early February, which will provide a clarity to the organizers to adjust the the tournament in the stipulated time frame. It is likely that schedule for season 17 will be released in the mid February, just before a month to that start of the tournament.

How IPL scheduled previously during elections?

The second season of the IPL, back in 2009, was intended to organize by the then Chairman Lalit Modi entirely in India. The schedule was revised multiple times to avoid security shortage. However, many state governments refused to co-operate with the organizers. This forceful move pushed the organizers to shift the complete tournament to South Africa during winter months.

Again in 2014, IPL faced scheduling issues again. The initial part of the season was held in UAE and the latter was conducted in India after the elections in certain states. The Government provided security resources to hold the competition after elections.

The IPL commission did find the success formula to hold the event entirely during 2019 elections. The season was planned in such a way that games are held before or after the conclusion of elections in particular states. This helped to reduce the burden on the government to manage the security workforce.

With the commission finding a way to successfully host the tournament in 2019, the organizers will be more pleased to produce the same again this year.
