The former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh of India believes opener Shubman Gill will recover in time for Saturday, October 14’s high-stakes 2023 World Cup match against Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Yuvraj disclosed that he attempted to uplift Gill’s spirits by bringing up the fact that he participated in the 2011 World Cup despite facing cancer.
Gill’s guru, Yuvraj, has been instrumental in his ascent through the ranks of international cricket. Due to illness, the latter was unable to play in India’s opening two World Cup matches against Australia and Afghanistan. He is in Ahmedabad, where India will play Pakistan, their bitter rivals, on Saturday, although it is unclear if he will play.
Yuvraj told ANI in an interview that he told Gill about his experience playing cricket in 2011 while battling cancer. Says Yuvraj:
“Shubham Gill ko maine tagda kar diya hai [I have strengthened Shubham Gill]. I told him that I had played in the World Cup while battling cancer, so I got ready quickly to join the team. Hopefully, he will be ready for the India vs Pakistan game.
When you have a fever and dengue, it is really tough to play a cricket match, and I have experienced that. So I hope that if he is fit, then he will definitely play,” the 41-year-old said.
When India won the World Cup in 2011, Yuvraj was named the Player of the Tournament after using his left-arm spin to score 362 runs and take 15 wickets.
