Sunil Gavaskar Calls for increasing Ranji Trophy fee to 3 times to motivate cricketers

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has brought forward his thoughts with a call for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to triple the fees for players participating in the Ranji Trophy. This move, he believes, would motivate more cricketers to participate in the tournament and reduce the number of players pulling out.

Sunil Gavaskar’s suggestions for BCCI

Gavaskar’s suggestion comes in the wake of the BCCI’s introduction of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’, a reward structure above the existing match fee for red-ball internationals. Players playing more than seven matches in a 9-Test season stand to earn a significant amount of money.

Gavaskar lauded the BCCI’s move to incentivize Test cricket and expressed his desire for similar incentives to be introduced in the domestic circuit. Speaking at an event by CHAMPS Foundation in Mumbai, Gavaskar said, “If the Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, certainly there’ll be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, and a lot fewer pullouts from the Ranji Trophy because if the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match are a good fee, there will be fewer people pulling out for various reasons”.

The former Indian opening batter also suggested that the Ranji season should start in October and finish by mid-December to ensure player availability. He believes that having the Ranji Trophy before the white-ball tournaments would mean that everyone would be available to play, except for those featuring for India.

Sunil Gavaskar’s call for increased fees is not without precedent. Last year, the BCCI increased the prize money for Ranji Trophy winners to INR 5 crore. However, Gavaskar believes that a further increase in fees would attract more players to the tournament and reduce the number of players pulling out.

The cricketing fraternity has largely welcomed Sunil Gavaskar’s suggestions. Many believe that his call for increased fees and a rescheduled Ranji season could go a long way in motivating Indian cricketers and improving the quality of domestic cricket.
