The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride for the Indian cricketers selected for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The latest victims of what is being termed as the ‘selection curse’ are Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR), was dismissed for a first-ball duck in RR’s chase of 202 against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad. Samson, who had been in excellent form until then, faced an unplayable in-swinger from veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar. This dismissal marked a low point in Samson’s IPL 2024 campaign.

On the same day, Yuzvendra Chahal, another T20 World Cup-bound Indian player, registered his most expensive spell in the IPL. Chahal, a skilled leg-spinner, conceded 62 runs in 4 overs without taking a wicket against SRH. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen of SRH went after him, resulting in this forgettable outing for Chahal.

T20 World Cup Selection Curse on MI players

The selection curse worked hours after the T20 World Cup squad was announced on Tuesday. In the evening game between Lucknow and Mumbai in Lucknow, captain Rohit Sharma fell for 4 off 5 balls. Suryakumar Yadav, the No. 1 T20I batter, was dismissed for a 6-ball 10.

Hardik Pandya, who was picked as the Indian team’s vice-captain, was out for a golden duck in Tuesday’s clash in Lucknow. The failure of the big guns in MI’s batting unit meant they were bundled for 144 for 7 in 20 overs.

However, Jasprit Bumrah was curse-proof as the senior pacer gave away just 17 runs in the contest in his 4-over spell. Despite Bumrah’s heroics, LSG went on to beat Mi by 4 wickets.

T20 World Cup Selection Curse on CSK

The Super Kings duo of Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja were also victims of the selection curse as they failed with the bat in CSK’s defeat to PBKS in Chennai on Wednesday, May 1. Shivam Dube, who was hitting spinners without breaking a sweat in IPL 2024, fell for 0 after failing to hit a left-arm spinner, his favourable match-up. He fell for a first-ball duck after missing a slog sweep against Harpreet Brar.

On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja fell for 2 from 4 balls with leg-spinner Rahul Chahar picking up his wicket.
