RR Captain Sanju Samson fined 12 Lakhs for slow over rate offence

Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Gujarat Titans. This incident occurred during the final-ball thriller at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Wednesday, April 10.

The IPL has strict regulations regarding the pace of play to ensure matches are completed within a reasonable time frame. Teams are expected to complete their quota of 20 overs within 90 minutes. However, during the match against Gujarat Titans, the Rajasthan Royals were found to be five minutes behind the cut-off time.

First offence of slow over rate for Sanju Samson

This breach of the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences resulted in a hefty fine for Samson. As it was his team’s first offence of the season, Samson was fined ₹12 lakhs. The IPL’s Code of Conduct stipulates that the captain of the offending team is held responsible for any slow over rate offences.

”Sanju Samson, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on April 10,” said an IPL statement.

”As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to a minimum over-rate offences, Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the statement added.

The match itself was a nail-biter, with the Shubman Gill-led Titans winning the match by three wickets in a last-ball thriller. Despite a strong performance from the Royals, which included an unbeaten 68 off 38 deliveries from Sanju Samson and a 78 from Riyan Parag, the Titans managed to chase down the target of 197 runs.
