Mayank Agarwal roped in as cover for Ruturaj Gaikwad for the ongoing T20I series against SL

Ruturaj Gaikwad will have to further wait for his chances for the Indian T20I team as he was ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka due to a wrist injury. Gaikwad got a chance to feature in the last T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata but failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Now, Indian test opener Mayank Agarwal has been roped in as the cover for Ruturaj Gaikwad. Agarwal had reached Chandigarh ahead of the two-Test matches, out of which the first one will be played in Mohali. Team management called Mayank to join the T20I camp as a cover for the remaining two games.

Although Agarwal hasn’t made his test debut yet, he has proved his mettle in this format by consistently performing for the Punjab Kings in IPL. He has played in 164 T20s and is rumored to lead the Punjab Kings in the upcoming season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad had a stellar IPL season as he won the orange cap for the 2021 season while playing for Chennai Super Kings. He also had a phenomenal Vijay Hazare season which earned him an ODI call-up. However, the budding career of the talented Gaikwad has come to a halt with his wrist injury. Indian team is already reeling from the injuries to KL Rahul Suryakumar Yadav, Washington Sundar, and Deepak Chahar.

“Batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the ongoing T201 series against Sri Lanka. He had complained of pain in his right wrist joint ahead of the first T20I in Lucknow on Thursday and was examined by the BCCI Medical Team,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in the statement. He will head to NCA for further management of his injury.

“An MRI scan was later conducted followed by a specialist consultation. Ruturaj will now head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further management of his injury.”
