The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has been a hotbed for discussions, with the ‘Impact Player’ rule being one of the most debated topics. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah addressed this issue, stating that the board is open to re-evaluating the rule after the conclusion of IPL 2024.

The ‘Impact Player’ rule, introduced as a ‘test case’, allows teams to bring in a 12th player at any point in a match to replace a player from the original XI announced at the toss. This rule has significantly impacted the current edition of the IPL, with teams exceeding the 250-run barrier eight times. It has been a topic of contention among players, coaches, and analysts, who argue that it allows teams to have prolonged batting lineups, thereby presenting challenges to bowlers.

Players express concerns about the Impact Player rule

India’s captain Rohit Sharma has expressed concerns that the rule hampers the growth of all-rounders as they do not receive enough bowling opportunities. Other players, including Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar of Delhi Capitals (DC), and Mitchell Starc, Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR’s) Australia fast bowler, have also voiced their concerns.

Despite the criticism, Jay Shah highlighted the positive side of the rule, stating that it provides additional playing opportunities to two Indian players. He emphasized that the game is becoming more competitive due to the rule.

“Impact player rule was brought in as a test case. On the bright side, it is providing additional playing opportunities to two Indian players,” Jay Shah said.

“Isn’t it important that two Indian players are getting a chance? The game is also becoming more competitive,” he added.

Shah stated that all parties would convene to decide on the future of the rule, most likely after the T20 World Cup. He said, “But still, if the players feel that this is not alright we will speak on it. However, no one has said anything about it yet. After the IPL and the World Cup, we will have a meeting and decide.’
