The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to begin its search for a new head coach for the men’s team, with the current coach, Rahul Dravid’s tenure ending in June. This announcement was made by BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah.

Dravid, a former Indian cricketer and captain, took over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team in 2023. His tenure has been marked by several notable achievements, including the team’s impressive performances in various international tournaments. However, as per the norms, his tenure is set to end after the T20 World Cup in June.

The New Head Coach will be appointed by June end: Jay Shah

Jay Shah stated that the BCCI will not repeat the mistake it made last year when it invited applications for the head coach only after the incumbent coach’s tenure had ended. This time around, applications will be invited even before the team leaves for the T20 World Cup. This proactive approach is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition and giving ample time for the new coach to settle in.

Interestingly, Shah did not rule out the possibility of Dravid reapplying for the role. He stated, “Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end in June. If he wants to reapply, he can”4. This opens up an intriguing possibility. If Dravid does decide to reapply and is selected, it would provide continuity and stability to the team, which could be beneficial given the team’s recent performances under his guidance.

The new head coach will be offered to take charge till the ODI World Cup in 2027. This long-term appointment is aimed at providing stability to the team and allowing the coach to implement their strategies and plans effectively. The rest of the backroom staff will be appointed in consultation with the new head coach.

Jay Shah also confirmed that it was unlikely that India will split the coaching role based on formats. He said, “We are looking for a long-term coach for three years. There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of all-format players. Ultimately, it will be the Cricket Advisory Committee’s (CAC) call. I have to implement what they decide.”
