Jasprit Bumrah, India’s spearhead in all formats, is looking forward to getting the added responsibility as Indian selectors look for a Test captain. Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli dropped a bombshell by announcing his decision to step down as the Test captain of the country.

The likes of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul stand as frontrunners for the job as Rishabh Pant has an outside chance given the backing he has from legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Yuvraj Singh. However, Jasprit Bumrah has also emerged as a prospective candidate for the leadership role.

Bumrah was appointed as the stand-in vice-captain for the Johannesburg Test against South Africa earlier this month after Kohli had incurred an upper back spasm and Rahul was elevated to his position. Jasprit has also been named the vice-captain of the ODI series against South Africa which will commence from 19 January.

“If given an opportunity, it will be an honor and I don’t see any player would say no and I am no different. Be it any leadership group, I always look to contribute however I can, to the best of my abilities,” Bumrah replied to a query from PTI in a press conference ahead of the start of the three-match ODI series against South Africa starting Wednesday.

“I look at this situation in the same manner…taking responsibility and talking to players and helping them out has always been my approach and it will always be my approach going further keeping any situation in mind,” he added.

India and South Africa will lock horns in a three-match ODI series which will conclude the tour. The Indian team will be missing the services of their new white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma who sustained a hamstring injury before leaving for South Africa.
