Mumbai Indians may not have qualified but they did play like champions as they gave their all to pull off a miracle. Ishan Kishan returns to form in style

Memes galore on Twitter after Ishan Kishan makes mockery of SRH bowlers with fastest fifty of IPL 2021 | Cricket - Hindustan Times

Ishan Kishan was having a terrible IPL 2021. Whether it was the India-leg or the UAE-leg, he wasn’t able to contribute much with his bat. This season was clearly a downgrade from his previous season where he scored 500+ runs and hit the most number of sixes. He was dropped from the MI playing XI and critics started questioning his place in the World Cup squad.

But as soon as the youngster returned to his favored position of opening the batting, his fortunes changed. In his comeback match against RR, he scored a 25-ball fifty as Mumbai chased a low score inside 9 overs.

Ishan Kishan bettered his performance when the team needed him the most. The dynamic left hander scored scintillating 84 off 32 deliveries as he took the SRH bowlers apart. Kishan also scored the fastest 50 (16 balls) by a MI batsmen. Along with his attacking batting and Surya’s astonishing 80, Mumbai scored 235 in 20 overs. MI eventually won the game but couldn’t qualify due to their poor net run rate.

You are selected as an opener, you just have to be prepared for that: Virat told Ishan Kishan

Virat Kohli was seen having a long chat with Kishan last week after the MI-RCB encounter, when the left-hander was dejected following a few low scores. In the post match interview, Kishan revealed that Kohli had told him to be prepared to open the batting for India in the upcoming ICC event.

“I would love to open and that’s what Virat bhai said – ‘you are selected as an opener, you just have to be prepared for that.’ In the bigger stage, you need to be prepared for every situation I feel,” Ishan Kishan told host broadcaster Star Sports after the game against SunRisers Hyderabad.

“I had a good chat with Virat bhai, Jasprit bhai also helped me. Even HP, KP were there to support me. Everyone supported me and they said it’s a learning stage for you, make sure you learn from here and don’t make the same mistakes in the upcoming world cup games. That was the part where I learned from them. I was just taking one point at a time,” he added.

Indian team already has two full time openers in Rohit and Rahul who may be the first choice openers for the management. Kohli has also started opening the batting for RCB in this season and has previously stated his intentions of opening with Rohit. But selectors did select Ishan Kishan as an opener and second choice wicketkeeper in the side.

Highlights:

• Ishan Kishan revealed that Kohli told him that he is selected as an opener.

• Ishan Kishan thanks Virat, Bumrah, Hardik and Krunal for supporting him through his lean patch.
