Following the footsteps of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his disappointment over England players leaving the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 early.

Irfan Pathan’s remarks against English Players

Pathan’s criticism came in the wake of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) match, where the absence of Jos Buttler from the Royals’ lineup was conspicuous. Buttler, along with Sam Curran and Jonny Bairstow, left the IPL to join the England team for a T20I series against Pakistan.

The early departure of these players has raised eyebrows in the cricketing fraternity. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also lost Phil Salt, a key player who scored 435 runs in 12 matches this season. His departure comes just ahead of the IPL playoffs.

Irfan Pathan took to social media to voice his displeasure, stating, “Either be available for full season or don’t come!”. This sentiment echoes Gavaskar’s earlier criticism, where he suggested that players who assure franchises of their availability for the full season but leave early should face penalties.

Gavaskar also proposed that the cricket boards of these players should not receive their commission. He emphasized that while he supports players choosing their country before anything else, it is unfair to the franchises if players pull out after assuring them of their full-season availability.

The impact of these departures is already being felt. RR’s batting faltered on the Guwahati pitch in their defeat to PBKS, highlighting Buttler’s absence. Similarly, PBKS will miss the contributions of Curran, who scored 63 runs and took two crucial wickets, in their upcoming encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 19.
