In a record-breaking evening in Vizag, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) extended their winning start to IPL 2024 by hammering Delhi Capitals (DC) by 106 runs. Sunil Narine created havoc with the bat, especially in the powerplay to put his side in a commendable position right from the beginning. The match was a spectacle of batting prowess, with KKR posting the second-highest total in IPL history.

Sunil Narine stars in the second-highest IPL total

The veteran all-rounder Sunil Narine was the architect of the record feat. His explosive innings of 85 runs off just 39 balls set the stage for KKR’s mammoth total. This was Narine’s highest score in T20, surpassing his previous best of 79.

Sunil Narine’s batting style, often described as ‘educated slogging’, was on full display during the match. Despite the two-bouncer-an-over rule, which was expected to hinder his aggressive batting style, Narine managed to guess the bowlers’ intentions correctly. Whether the ball was pitched short or given width, Narine’s sharp eye and clean bat swing ensured that the ball sailed over the boundary.

The carnage didn’t stop with Narine. Debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi added 54 off 27 balls, contributing significantly to KKR’s total. The hard-hitting duo of Andre Russell and Rinku Singh also chipped in with vital knocks, scoring a 19-ball 41 and an 8-ball 26 respectively.

KKR’s onslaught resulted in a total of 272 for 7, making it the second-highest total in the 17-year-long history of the competition. The only total to surpass this was SunRisers Hyderabad’s 277 for 3, a record set in the same IPL 2024 season.

The DC bowlers, who had been almost unplayable against Chennai Super Kings at the same venue, found themselves at the receiving end of KKR’s batting fury. The victory not only extended KKR’s winning start to the season but also propelled them to the top of the IPL 2024 points table. On the other hand, DC slumped down to the ninth spot, having registered just one win from their opening four matches.
