In the high-stakes world of the Indian Premier League (IPL), every second counts. This was a lesson learned the hard way by Gujarat Titans’ (GT) captain, Shubman Gill, who was fined Rs 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their crucial match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 10, 2024.

Shubman Gill roars back with a fiery century

The match, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, was a critical one for GT. They were up against the defending champions, CSK, and a win was crucial to keep their playoff hopes alive. Gill led from the front, scoring a brilliant century (104 runs off just 55 balls) and was awarded the Player of the Match. His teammate, B Sai Sudharsan, also scored a century, helping GT to a formidable total of 231 for three.

Despite their impressive performance with the bat, GT fell short in terms of maintaining the required over-rate. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL confirmed the penalty, highlighting it as the team’s second offence under the IPL’s Code of Conduct. This resulted in a hefty fine of Rs 24 lakh for Gill, reflecting the seriousness of the offence.

In addition to Shubman Gill’s fine, the other members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were individually fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever was lower. This disciplinary action underscores the importance of adhering to over-rate regulations in the IPL.

Despite the setback of the over-rate penalty, GT emerged victorious in the match, defeating CSK by 35 runs. This win kept their slim playoff hopes alive.
