IPL 2024 edition is set to witness A Smart Replay System that will be introduced in the upcoming IPL to boost the accuracy in decision-making.

The TV umpire are set to get inputs directly from two operators of the Hawk-Eye system who will sit in the same room as him and help with images captured from eight hi-speed cameras placed across the ground, a report in ESPNCricinfo stated.

It has come to light that under the new system which is being implemented, the role of the TV broadcast director becomes redundant who serves as a ‘conduit’ between the umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators.

The new system will enable the TV umpire to analyze more visuals than before and it includes split-screen images, and will also broadcast live his interactions with the Hawk-Eye operators so that the viewers have a clear understanding of the thought process.

The upcoming system aims to assist umpires in making better decisions by providing them with clearer visuals from multiple angles. This will be particularly helpful in cases where catches near boundary ropes, caught behind, leg-before, stumping or those taken inches off the turf need to be judged accurately.

This move comes after the controversial India vs England Test series, where the accuracy of DRS was questioned multiple times. Recently, the BCCI conducted a two-day workshop for selected umpires, including both Indian and overseas umpires, who will be working with the Smart Replay System in this IPL.
