In a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a 20-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI), despite a magnificent century from Rohit Sharma. The former MI skipper, played a spectacular innings, scoring a hundred off just 61 balls. However, his efforts were in vain as the rest of the MI batting lineup failed to provide adequate support.

On the other hand, CSK’s performance was a team effort. The foundation of their innings was laid by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube, who scored 69 and 66 not out respectively. Their partnership of 90 runs off just 45 deliveries for the third wicket set the stage for a big total.

The real game-changer, however, was the explosive cameo by MS Dhoni in the final over of the innings. The seasoned cricketer, at the age of 42, smashed three consecutive sixes off Hardik Pandya, amassing 26 runs in the final over. His power-hitting propelled CSK past the daunting 200-run mark.

Rohit Sharma’s knock was not enough to cruise past CSK’s total

Defending a total of 207, CSK found their hero in 21-year-old Matheesa Pathirana. The young bowler picked up four crucial wickets, disrupting MI’s momentum. Despite MI’s strong start, reaching 70 runs in just 7 overs, Pathirana’s introduction turned the tide in CSK’s favour.

Rohit Sharma led MI’s innings from start to finish, initiating aggressive batting tactics early on to unsettle CSK’s bowlers. Despite a mid-innings stumble, Rohit Sharma anchored a vital 60-run partnership with Tilak Varma. However, Pathirana’s late strikes hindered MI’s progress, even as Rohit Sharma himself notched a century in the final over. With MI needing 77 runs from the last six overs, Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande utilized cutters effectively, conceding just five runs in two overs.

In the end, MI fell short by 20 runs, marking CSK’s first away win of the season. This victory also marked CSK’s fourth win of the 2024 IPL edition and they cemented their position at 3rd in the points table while MI slipped to the 8th spot.

Mumbai will be disappointed with that loss as they let things slip after being in a dominant position both with the bat and earlier with the ball as well. They should have restricted Chennai to about 190 runs but conceded 15 runs or so more and then with the bat, they left too many runs for the death overs.
