The 42nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 witnessed a historic event as Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off the highest successful run chase in T20 history against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Punjab Kings’ successful chase

KKR, after winning the toss, decided to bat first and posted a mammoth total of 261 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. The innings was powered by P Salt’s 75 runs off 37 balls and S Narine’s quickfire 71 off 32 deliveries. The duo’s explosive batting led KKR to what seemed like an unassailable total.

However, PBKS, undeterred by the daunting target, launched a counter-attack that left everyone spellbound. PBKS chased down the target of 262 runs in just 18.4 overs, losing only 2 wickets. This chase surpassed the previous highest T20 chase of 259 runs made by South Africa against West Indies.

Jonny Bairstow, the Punjab Kings opener, played a pivotal role in this record chase. He scored an unbeaten 108 runs off just 48 balls, hitting eight fours and nine sixes. His explosive batting provided the necessary momentum for PBKS to reach the target.

Moreover, the match witnessed a record 42 sixes, the most in any T20 game. Punjab Kings alone hit 24 sixes, the most by any team in an IPL innings.
