IPL 2024: Mohit Sharma bowls most expensive spell in the history of the tournament

In the annals of the Indian Premier League (IPL), April 24, 2024, will be remembered as a day when Gujarat Titans’ bowler Mohit Sharma etched his name in the record books, albeit for an unfortunate reason. In a match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Mohit ended up conceding 73 runs in his four overs, thereby recording the most expensive figures in IPL history.

Mohit Sharma bags an unwanted record

The 20th over of the innings proved to be particularly disastrous for Mohit. Delhi Capitals’ captain Rishabh Pant took the attack to him, smoking 31 runs in that over alone. Pant hit 4 sixes and a boundary, taking full advantage of Mohit’s off-day with the ball. None of Mohit’s trademark variations seemed to work as Pant dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground.

Mohit’s figures of none for 73 in four overs surpassed the previous record held by Basil Thampi, who had conceded 70 runs in 4 overs for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018. This unwanted record is a stark contrast to Mohit’s reputation for bowling miserly spells, especially in the death overs.

MOST EXPENSIVE IPL FIGURES

The onslaught from Pant helped Delhi Capitals post a mammoth total of 224. The team scored 97 runs in their last 5 overs, which is the second-best total in the said period in an innings in the history of the IPL. The small boundaries at the Arun Jaitley Stadium did not help Mohit’s cause as his slower balls were deposited into the stands.

Mohit Sharma, who picked up 27 wickets in 14 matches at a stunning economy rate of 8 last season for GT, has not found it easy in IPL 2024. He has conceded at 10.35 per over this season with 10 wickets in 9 matches.
