Mumbai Indians’ captain, Hardik Pandya, has been fined INR 24 lakh due to a slow over-rate during their match against Lucknow Super Giants on April 30, 2024. This was not the first instance of such an offence for the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL season. It was the team’s second offence under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences.

The second instance of slow over-rate from Hardik Pandya

The match saw the Mumbai Indians struggling to maintain the pace of play, leading to this significant penalty. The Mumbai franchise was punished heavily this time as they were guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate for the second time this season. Earlier, during MI’s match against Punjab Kings, Hardik was fined INR 12 Lakh for a slow over-rate.

In addition to Pandya’s fine, the rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 Lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser. This collective fine indicates that the entire team was punished for not being able to finish the overs within the stipulated time.

The fine on Hardik Pandya and his team came after a disappointing loss by four wickets against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium. The Mumbai Indians, despite a strong team on paper, have had a poor run in IPL 2024, standing in 9th position in the points table with just 3 wins in 9 matches.
