The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) experienced an unexpected detour in the ongoing IPL 2024. Following their impressive 98-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants, the team, led by Shreyas Iyer, embarked on their journey back to Kolkata. However, what was supposed to be a routine flight turned into a memorable night in Varanasi due to adverse weather conditions.

KKR charter flight took multiple diversions

The team departed from Lucknow at 5:45 p.m., with an estimated arrival time in Kolkata of 7:25 p.m. However, the weather had other plans. The charter flight carrying the KKR players was first diverted to Guwahati due to inclement weather over Kolkata. The KKR media team provided an update at 8:46 p.m., stating, “Due to inclement weather over Kolkata, the KKR charter flight has been diverted to Guwahati. We’ve just landed here.”

With the weather seemingly clearing up, the team received clearance to fly back to Kolkata from Guwahati. The estimated arrival time was updated to 11 p.m. However, the ordeal was far from over. Despite several attempts, the flight was unable to land in Kolkata due to the persisting bad weather. This led to a mid-air diversion to Varanasi.

The team was then forced to spend the night in Varanasi. The final update from the KKR media team came at 3:00 a.m., announcing, “The team would be checking into Varanasi Hotel for an overnight stay. Return flight to Kolkata TBD on Tuesday (7 May) afternoon.”
