Delhi Capitals had won the toss and invited Rajasthan Royals to bat. RR skipper Sanju Samson revealed that his side has brought on Rassie Van der Dussen for Shimron Hetmyer. Royals had started out strong but they lost Jos Buttler early. It was quite an interesting move for the side to bring out R. Ashwin at 3 and that was totally paid off later on in the innings. A bit of a fightback was witnessed from Ashwin and Jaiswal in the powerplay.

R. Ashwin brought up his maiden IPL fifty which came in 37 balls. However, he was dismissed on the next delivery. He put up 53-run stand for the fourth wicket with Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 48 off 30 balls. The batting performances helped RR post 160 for six in 20 overs. DC absolutely suppressed RR for runs in the last five overs. RR could score just 44 runs and lost three wickets in that period and somehow tallied six runs from the final over.  Meanwhile, Chetan Sakariya, Anrich Nortje and Mitchell Marsh took two wickets each for DC.

Chasing the target, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh put up a 144-run partnership that gave them the edge in the contest. Mitchell Marsh hammered 89 runs off 62 balls while Warner was unbeaten on 52 off 41 and he notched his fifth half century of the season. Marsh could have been LBW off the very first ball he faced if RR had gone for the DRS while Warner survived as he was bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal but the bails did not come off. DC reached the target score comfortably with 11 balls left to spare.
