IPL 2022 – Match 4: Gujarat Titans wins the battle of the debutants after a last-over thriller

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) made their much-awaited debuts in the Indian Premier League(IPL) as they collided at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, March 28. Gujarat Titans got the better of their opponent as they picked up a by a five-wicket win with a thrilling finish.

Hardik Pandya had won the toss and opted to field first. The pacer Mohammed Shami emerged to be the stand out bowler for the Gujarat Titans as he destroyed the Lucknow Super Giants top-order. The pacer dismissed the key batter such as KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock and Manish Pandey. Varun Aaron also chipped in with a couple of wickets. First, the dismissal of Evin Lewis as Shubman Gill pulled off a stunning catch. He had once again struck to pick up the wicket of Ayush Badoni. Rashid Khan also bagged a wicket.

Gujarat suffered a collapse as they lost four wickets inside the powerplay. They were 29/4 at one point. Titans managed to pile up pressure taking successive wickets. However, the duo of Deepak Hooda and Ayush Badoni rose to the occasion and both the batters scored fifties to help KL Rahul’s side rebuild the innings and bounce back. Hooda departed after scoring 55 while Badoni played a knock of 54 and assisted his side to post a respectable score of 158 at the expense of 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.

Coming on to bat, Gujarat Titans suffered some early blows.  Pacer Dushmantha Chameera removed Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar early in the powerplay to leave Gujarat Titans wobbling at 44 for two after the first six overs.

They stumbled and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. David Miller played a crucial knock of 30 runs off 21 balls for Hardik Pandya’s side. Rahul Tewatia and Abhinav Manohar remained unbeaten on 40 and 15 respectively to just nick off the target as the highly-anticipated match wrapped up with a final over thriller.

Gujarat Titans are set to face Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 2, while, Lucknow Super Giants will face Chennai Super Kings on Thursday, March 31.
