IND vs SA 3rd ODI Review: Chahar’s heroics end in vain as India endure humiliating whitewash

India and South Africa locked horns for the third and final ODI match in the 3-match series at Newlands in Cape Town. The home side already sealed the series with a 2-0 lead after back-to-back comprehensive wins at the Boland Park in Paarl. The Proteas attained a clean sweep as they won series 3-0, having won the final game by a mere 4 runs.

The stand-in captain KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat. South Africa after the end of stipulated 50 overs posted a score of 287 as they got bundled out with a delivery still to spare. It was Quinton de Kock, who was brilliant with the bat. He top-scored for the home team with his 124-run knock. De Kock received support from Rassie van der Dussen as the duo added 144 runs for the fourth wicket.

In the end, it was David Miller played a good knock of 39-run as it helped guiding South Africa to a good total. While for India with the ball, Prasidh Krishna was the pick of the bowlers with his three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah, Deepak Chahar and picked two each and Yuzvendra Chahal got one.

India started out well with the bat eyeing a consolation victory. Phehlukwayo had removed Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant in one over. Previously, Dhawan(61 runs off 73 balls) added 98 runs for the third wicket with former skipper Kohli, who scored 65 runs off 84 balls. Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav made their contributions of 39 runs and 26 runs respectively.

In the end Deepak Chahar played a brilliant cameo at no. 7. He smashed five fours and two sixes to keep the visitors’ hopes alive. He also completed the fifty partnership with Bumrah and later got dismissed. India tried hard to salvage the match but failed and bundled out falling short of four runs. For The Proteas, Andile Phehlukwayo and Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets each.

India is set to host West Indies next for a 3-match ODI series and the opening game to take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 6.
