The stand-in captain KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat. India posted 287 runs at the expense of 6 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs. The innings saw half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and the skipper KL Rahul. Pant and Rahul added 115 runs for the third wicket which was the stand-out partnership of the Indian batting. Pant top-scored for India with 85 off 71 balls while skipper KL Rahul made 55 off 79 balls.

Rahul also added 63 runs for the first wicket with opener Shikhar Dhawan. In the end, a great 48-run partnership was stitched by Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur in the last seven overs. Shardul was brilliant with the bat yet again as he scored an unbeaten 40 runs. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer once again failed to make an impact on the game.

The former skipper Virat Kohli was also criticized for being dismissed on a duck. The South Africa bowlers were brilliant as Tabraiz Shamsi picked up a couple of wickets while Sisanda Magala, Aiden Markram Keshav Maharaj got one each.

Coming to chase down the 280 target, Malan added 132 runs with Quinton de Kock (78) for the first wicket. The duo of Janneman Malan (91) and Temba Bavuma (35) amassed a 70-run stand before Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah provided a quick breakthrough to visitors. Shardul Thakur was the other wicket-taker for India.
