Harbhajan Singh backs Virat Kohli to lead RCB in IPL 2025 if they fail to make it to playoffs

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has suggested that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) should consider reinstating Virat Kohli as their captain for the IPL 2025 season. This suggestion comes in the wake of RCB’s performance in the ongoing IPL 2024 season, where they are still in the race for the playoffs.

Faf du Plessis has been leading RCB since the start of the 2022 season, in which they made it to the playoffs. Virat Kohli, who led the team for more than a decade, stepped down from the top job after the 2021 season, saying he needed to focus on managing his workload. Notably, Kohli was leading India in all three formats of the game when he was leading the Bengaluru-based franchise in 2021.

Harbhan Singh on Virat Kohli leading RCB in IPL 2025

Harbhajan Singh believes that Virat Kohli, with his combination of intent, commitment, and aggression, is the ideal candidate to lead RCB forward. He stated, “If they don’t qualify, they should look to get some Indian guy. Why not bring Virat Kohli back as captain.” He further added that Kohli’s aggression and intent have a positive impact on the team.

“As Dhoni has a lot of impact in Chennai, Virat Kohli is a big leader, he knows the kind of cricket they need to play. Now they are playing with lot of aggression, lot of intent and that is what Virat Kohli brings. I would like to see Virat Kohli leading the side going forward,” Harbhajan added.

Kohli, who is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing IPL with 661 runs from 13 innings at a strike rate of 155.16, stepped down as RCB captain after the IPL 2021 season. He led the team for more than a decade and took them to the final in IPL 2016. Despite stepping down from captaincy, Kohli has often expressed his love and commitment to RCB, stating that he wants to finish his IPL career in Bengaluru.

Harbhajan’s suggestion comes at a time when RCB, after a poor start to the IPL 2024 season, has made a remarkable comeback. They have won five matches in a row and risen to the fifth spot on the points table. This resurgence has coincided with Kohli hitting peak form with the bat.
