Gambhir has lashed out at de Villiers for his comments on Pandya’s captaincy. He stated that de Villiers was not fit to comment on Pandya as he had not captained in the IPL. Gambhir’s stance is firm and unyielding, reflecting his belief in Pandya’s leadership abilities.

De Villiers had commented that Pandya’s persona on the field is not genuine and that the senior Mumbai Indians (MI) players had not bought into the idea of his persona. This critique was met with strong opposition from Gambhir, who defended Pandya and stated that it was completely fine for MI to fail in the first season of Pandya’s captaincy.

Gautam Gambhir emphasized that Pandya needed time to apply his ideas on MI and should stop listening to the experts. He argued that one should judge someone’s captaincy by his team’s performance. Gambhir pointed out that if MI had performed well, all experts would have been praising Pandya.

“It’s not important what experts are saying, it’s their job to say something or the other. My opinion has always been that you judge someone’s captaincy by his team’s performance. If MI had performed well (this year), all experts would have been praising him. Today MI have not performed well and that’s why everyone is talking about it,” Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.

Gambhir also highlighted that Pandya has come from another franchise, so it takes time to adjust and deliver at Mumbai. He urged critics to give Pandya more time, stating that it’s fine if he hasn’t delivered yet.

“It’s important to realise that Hardik Pandya has come from some other franchise so it takes time, give him some time. Suddenly, you expect him to deliver at Mumbai, after captaining for two years at Gujarat. He could have delivered, I am not saying he couldn’t have but if he hasn’t, it’s fine, give him a bit more time,” he further added.

In a further rebuttal to de Villiers’ critique, Gautam Gambhir pointed out that de Villiers himself has not achieved anything in the IPL apart from his individual runs. He stated that de Villiers had not achieved anything from a team point of view. Gambhir asserted that Pandya is still an IPL-winning captain.

“Judging him every day, every match, everything is not right. Those experts who have criticised him should see their own performances when they have captained a side. Whether it’s AB de Villiers or Kevin Pietersen. I don’t think in their career there is any performance of leadership, nothing. If you go and see their records, it’s worse than any other leader,” Gautam Gambhir said.
