The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with matches swinging like a pendulum until the very last ball. One such nail-biting encounter was between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where a decision by RCB’s Dinesh Karthik stirred up a controversy.

In the match, RCB was chasing a massive target of 223 runs set by KKR. The chase was on track with Karthik, RCB’s designated finisher, at the crease. However, his decision to deny singles to Karn Sharma in the penultimate over raised eyebrows.

Despite needing 31 runs off the last two overs, Dinesh Karthik refused to take singles on three occasions in the 19th over bowled by Andre Russell. This decision left RCB with a daunting task of scoring 21 runs in the last over with just two wickets in hand.

Dinesh Karthik’s dismissal off the final delivery of the 19th over-shifted the momentum further in KKR’s favour. However, Karn Sharma, who was denied the strike, showcased remarkable hitting in the final over, smashing three sixes off Mitchell Starc.

Karn’s valiant effort brought the equation down to 3 runs needed off the last ball. Despite this, RCB fell short of the target by just one run. This led to criticism of Karthik’s decision to deny singles to Sharma, especially given Sharma’s subsequent display of power-hitting.

Critics argued that Karthik underestimated Sharma’s batting capabilities. Fans expressed their displeasure, with some stating that Karthik denied singles as if he were batting with a non-striker who couldn’t hit big shots.
