Rishabh Pant, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman and captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC), has been making headlines in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. However, it’s not just his explosive batting or agile wicket-keeping that’s in the news. Pant was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during the IPL match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Slow over-rate penalty for Rishabh Pant

The match took place on Sunday, March 31, at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The DC, under Pant’s leadership, pulled off a comfortable 20-run win over the defending champions CSK. However, the victory was somewhat overshadowed by the fine imposed on Pant.

The IPL has strict rules regarding the over rate to ensure that matches are completed within a reasonable time frame. Teams are expected to complete their quota of 20 overs within 90 minutes. If they fail to do so, the captain of the offending team is fined.

In Pant’s case, this was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences. As a result, he was fined Rs 12 lakhs. This incident made Rishabh Pant the second skipper after Gujarat’s Shubman Gill to be fined for slow over-rate in IPL 2024.

While the fine might seem steep, it’s important to note that the IPL has a tiered penalty system for slow overrates. For the first offence, the captain is fined Rs 12 lakh. If the team commits a second offence, the fine for the captain is doubled to Rs 24 lakh, and the other team members are fined either Rs 6 lakhs or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever is lesser. A third offence results in a fine of Rs 30 lakh for the captain and a one-match ban, while the other players are fined 50 per cent of their match fees or Rs 12 lakh each, whichever is lesser.

Despite the fine, Rishabh Pant had a decent outing with the bat. He scored 51 runs off 32 balls, helping DC end their two-match losing streak. His performance, coupled with the efforts of the other team members, ensured a victory for DC.
