2024 T20 World Cup Co-host West Indies get threats from Pakistan-based terrorist group

The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA, has been hit by a security concern. Reports have emerged that the co-hosts West Indies have received a terror threat from a group based in North Pakistan.

The threat reportedly comes from the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), an active terror module in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The group has allegedly tried to incite violence against the sporting event.

CWI responds to terror threats ahead of T20 World Cup

Cricket West Indies (CWI) CEO Johnny Graves has assured that their security protocols are quite organized and that they will take every possible precaution to ensure that the event goes smoothly. He stated that they are coordinating with all the participating countries and continuously monitoring the situation to ensure all safety measures are in place ahead of the tournament.

The ICC has also responded swiftly, working closely with the host countries to ensure appropriate security plans are in place. Officials have been in communication with authorities and received assurances from CWI about a comprehensive security strategy to address any potential risks.

Dr Keith Rowley, the Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, acknowledged the ever-present danger of terrorism and the importance of taking all threats seriously. He highlighted the increased security measures being implemented for large gatherings like the World Cup.

The T20 World Cup will be played across various locations in the Caribbean and the USA. The Caribbean venues include Kensington Oval (Barbados), Brian Lara Cricket Academy (Trinidad), Providence Stadium (Guyana), Sir Vivian Richards Stadium (Antigua), Darren Sammy Cricket Ground (St Lucia), and Arnos Vale Stadium (St Vincent). The USA venues include Eisenhower Park (New York), Broward County (Florida), and Grand Prairie Stadium (Texas).
